If we want to get serious about REAL job creation, we have to consider all logical options. Oregon already has a growing microbrewery industry, and our wine industry is being celebrated more and more, rivaling Nappa Valley. A regulated and controlled cannabis industry would bring even more permanent jobs, numbering in the thousands. With a legal cannabis industry, people could get their product from a licensed store that checks for ID, just like alcohol sales. Oregon once had a booming logging industry, but that time is long gone and we have to look forward to the future. Industrial hemp can grow excellently in Oregon, and could be a USA-made option for American customers instead of buying imported hemp products from China. Hemp can be made into thousands of products including as a BETTER alternative for products made from cotton, silk, and even millions of plastic products and it promotes Oregon's commitment to sustainable, environmentally friendly products. Oregon had an industrial hemp bill in 2009, and we will have another proposed soon. A hemp industry would mean THOUSANDS of real jobs.
On top of the thousands of jobs that industrial hemp would create, a cannabis industry in Oregon would bring in millions of dollars to the state in revenue, and millions more in taxes. The Oregon Medical Marijuana Program already generates over $8 million each year, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. If Oregon residents want to get serious about jobs and improving our economy, we must seriously consider the failure of cannabis prohibition and look forward towards a prosperous and profitable future in the cannabis industry. Cannabis TV is on Wednesdays at 8pm, channel 15 tune in to learn more, and get active in cannabis law reform.
