Did you know that during Prohibition, some people even just transporting alcohol were considered such scum that they were simply executed? What would you say if the same were done today for people working in the fast food industry? Or for those working in the now-legal alcohol industry? How about people who sell cars or are in the automotive business? Vehicular deaths total over 30,000 per year, that's MORE than ALL ILLEGAL DRUGS COMBINED! If you're going to talk trash about drug manufacturers, try thinking of the legal drugs people are popping every day before they get behind the wheel of their vehicle. The law of supply and demand dictitates that you cannot curb the desire, and you cannot regulate morality. If someone commits a real crime like theft, assault, murder or whatever else, then we will no doubt punish them under the law as required, but those who choose to consume a drug without harming others, should be left alone. But I can understand where you're coming from; it's much easier to see things in 2 dimensions, in black and white, instead of thinking critically and logically. With a legal cannabis industry, people could get their product from a licensed store that checks for ID, just like alcohol sales. Oregon once had a booming logging industry, but that time is long gone and we have to look forward to the future. Industrial hemp can grow excellently in Oregon, and could be a USA-made option for American customers instead of buying imported hemp products from China. Hemp can be made into thousands of products including as a BETTER alternative for products made from cotton, silk, and even millions of plastic products and it promotes Oregon's commitment to sustainable, environmentally friendly products. Being gay is protected under Equal Opportunity Employment (EEO) laws. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 established the first Federal law designed to protect US employees from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or of national origin. While it doesn't specifically mention sexual orientation, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has interpreted the prohibition of discrimination based on conduct to include discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Meanwhile, medical patients who are registered with a State level medical marijuana program, are not protected against discrimination. In 16 states including many West Coast states like Oregon, California and Washington, medical marijuana is legal under medical programs. Unfortunately, it is still legal in these states to fire someone who is an MMJ patient, even when that patient takes their medicine outside of work hours, with no decline or in any way adversely impacting their work performance.

Why is it that any MMJ patient can have their children taken away by Child Protective Services? They currently have the power to claim that being in a home with cannabis, a medicine safer than any opiate pharmaceudical pills, is a danger to that child and apparently a good enough excuse to take your child away from your custody. That is disgusting and shameful and should not be tolerated.

On top of that, I can have Federally granted student loans be permanently taken away if it is discovered that I chose to legally use a medicine safer than any other pill alternative. Just because I choose the safer option that doesn't have the severe adverse side effects of pharmaceutical prescriptions, I am wrongfully discriminated against.

The list of disgusting and shameful discrimination doesn't even stop there. I can be evicted from my residence for legally consuming cannabis, and also excluded from potential job positions based on drug testing, despite pharmaceudically prescribed pills being accepted. Even a few teens and children who greatly benefit from medical cannabis has been shunned, and even expelled from school for legally using cannabis under state law.

The Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 forbids discrimination on the grounds of a worker's military history, including any effects that the battlefield might have had on the worker's psyche. In relation to that, many veterans of the current Iraq / Afghanistan / Middle East wars are now finding that cannabis can help them cope with the severe trauma of PTSD. Yet, despite both the science and real world proof that cannabis helps alleviate the symptoms of PTSD, it is still something that can result in a veteran being fired from their job. Without cannabis, these soldiers can have extreme difficulty in dealing with their emotions, which can lead to disastrous results that we've seen before in the news, including suicides and murders.

This unjust, illegal, and immoral practice of discrimination can no longer be tolerated. The Federal government states that the EEO laws are, "designed to promote overall fairness", yet that does not happen. Selling illegal drugs are how the gangs make their money, and allow them to continue to operate and grow in size and community influence. As for keeping track, that doesn't even happen now, since OMMP (just like HIPAA laws) protects patients medical and personal information. Though the cops want a full list of names and addresses, they don't have them now, and they're not going to get them.

In you twisted logic, should we also have a police database for anyone who purchases alcohol? Being that alcohol is potentially deadly, and those who use it can possibly commit drunk driving which could be deadly, and alcohol users have higher rates of spousal abuse and child abuse. The reality is that the OMMP has an over 99% complaince rate, as noted in the study I've linked to below. In straight numbers though, that means that less than 100 of the 35,000+ patients have violated the law. With compliance at 99.3% and violations at 0.3%, the OMMP is considered the "Gold Standard" for medical cannabis laws, compared to the other 14 MMJ legal states.

Even basic scripts like Vicodin and Percoset are abuse more than medical cannabis. On top of that, the ignorance, fear and stigma against medical cannabis is still existant thanks to generations of people being brainwashed by the government and programs like DARE. As a result, only 25% (1 in 4) doctors will even consider recommending their patient for OMMP. I experience this myself with 5 ignorant or fearful doctors, and had to suffer without medication, going without any pills or cannabis until I was approved on OMMP.

The general public obviously still needs to be educated on this, as the ignorance and fear are still a detriment to the patients who want a safe and effective medicine, and have found medical cannabis to be the best for them, along with approval from their doctor. As far as traffic deaths, do some research before making unfounded claims. Post-mortem tests show many people who died in vehicle crashes had THC in their system. That's no surprise considering over 100 million people use it per year, making that 1 in 3 people nationwide, and that it stays in the system for multiple weeks. In comparison, I can do meth on Friday night and be tested clean on Monday morning, so that wouldn't show in a toxicology report.

The reality is that studies have also shown that impaired driving by any means, by any substance isn't good. That said, they proved that people who recently had pot vs. alcohol or prescription drugs, had less impairment in their performance by actually being more cautious and aware of their impairment, and drove slower. That means they're less likely to get into a crash, an if they do, it's less likely that there will fatalities when compared to drivers who've been drinking alcohol. The qualitative danger of pot is less than you exaggerate it to be. That's simple fear tactics and we don't buy it.

If Oregonians are serious about economic recovery, we have to take a hard look at this failed prohibition. It increases availability for teens, creates a black market for gangs to use as funding, uses up our dwindling police resources, and it's costing us millions.

Why not instead repeal the unjust law and create a new Oregon industry? We've got a dead forest industry and high unemployment still. That's right, as usual I have a reality perspective of the situation. It's just like pulling weeds. These cops try to make a big show of it like they're helping the community. If that were true they'd be, at the least, trying to stop the growing meth problem in the area by going after those manufacturing it. I've talked about that many times. The facts and reality of the situation are that the current prohibition policy create the free-for-all that enables kids and teens to get their hands on pot much more easily than alcohol. That is because alcohol is now a regulated and controlled industry where people are asked for ID by law and harsh penalties exist for those who fail to comply.

There's this thing called "industrial hemp" that is now legal at state level in Oregon. The bill was passed by Oregonians in 2009 to allow farmers to grow fields of hemp. Thanks to the Federal govt, Oregon farmers are still not allowed to grow even after this bill passed.
